Little Book of Style

I was arranging my mini bookshelf in my humble room dito sa bukid when I stumbled upon a little black book that I bought in Cagayan de Oro last December, together with a few titles that I’ve already finished reading.

I have forgotten this book already, buti na lang pala at nag-ayos ako kanina.

Anyway, this little black book is by Nina Garcia, and it’s called The Little Black Book of Style, published in 2007 by HarperCollins.

As far as I’m concerned, this is Nina’s first attempt in writing a book. She’s been writing for Elle magazine and we see her on tv via Project Runway.

The book of course is all about style. Dressing up not just the right way but finding your inner stylish self.

Although most of the suggestions and opinions Nina is sharing caters only to women, it also gives you insider information about how to be, how to do, and more how to’s in terms of making yourself presentable and dressing up appropriately according to the occasion.

Aside from the usual what’s hot and what’s not, what’s classic and fad, the basic needs to be eternally stylish, and your style guide to mixing and matching the right stuff, the book also has colorful illustrations by artist Ruben Toledo, quotes from fashion icons, an insider tips and tricks given by famous fashion designers and celebrities, and a decade-by-decade guide to what style, personalities, locations, music, movies and trends influenced a certain era.

To quote Nina Garcia;

I grew up in an unbearably hot city on the northwest tip of Colombia, a place where style and art were a part of the culture. I was constantly surrounded by incredibly vibrant, confident, feminine women, women who knew who they were and what image they wanted to convey to the world. They knew how to buy the right clothes for their bodies, how to edit out what did not suit them, and how to stay away from fads and maintain an aura of eternal style. It is my purpose with this book to inspire you the way these women inspired me.

Herbs: actually it's the preface of the book. Hihihi

Joms: that's totally fine baby. You are your own muse. Ang sabi nga ni aling Coco Chanel, 'fashion fades, style is eternal.'
